The Microsoft Software Systems Academy (MSSA) is an 18-week educational program that Microsoft conducts in partnership with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU.) It provides active duty soldiers and veterans with the necessary career skills to meet demand for server cloud administration, database business intelligence administration, cloud application development, and cybersecurity administrators. The program is one of few that trains active-duty U.S. service members for IT jobs and is a cornerstone of the DoD Skillbridge program, which prepares members on active duty for their next career. Classes in Fleming Island will start October 16. Chris Cortez, vice president of Military Affairs at Microsoft, says “Each year, more than 200,000 veterans transition back into civilian life, and with over 500,000 open IT jobs annually, we want to encourage veterans to seek  CS/STEM careers as a viable path. Microsoft established Microsoft Software Systems Academy, (MSSA), a platinum standard IT career transition program to address the IT skills shortage, and is just one of the ways service members can ease the transition into civilian life, and one of the programs Microsoft offers to ensure a workforce that’s representative of all voices.” The MSSA program launched in 2013 and has had over 600 graduates, many of whom have started careers with an average salary of $70,000. Interested military members and veterans do not need to have an IT background to qualify, but applicants will take an aptitude assessment before beginning the course. In addition to ERAU classroom work, Microsoft delivers coaching on professional development and building a personal brand. Active duty members within six months of their discharge date can apply with their command’s support. Throughout the program, service members have access to resources like JobPlex, a staffing agency Microsoft has on retainer to assist participants with career placement support. Upon successful completion of the course, participants are guaranteed an interview for a full-time position with Microsoft. Chris Cortez says “Veterans are trained to quickly assess, analyze and fix a situation with the resources at hand while working with a diverse group of people as a team, which maps directly to valuable skills needed for IT. Veterans are exactly the type of talent we are looking for to evolve the face of IT beyond the traditional four year degree, giving them not just a job, but a long-term career in the tech industry.    We value veterans for the qualities they bring to the job: a strong work ethic, loyalty, punctuality, teamwork, problem solving under pressure, their sense of duty and clear sense of commitment to a mission. Welcome emails generate 3 times higher open and click rates. They can generate 5 times higher revenue compared to other emails. Welcome emails introduce your customers to your brand within a series of three emails. They encourage your visitors to make a purchase within a targeted period of time. First email The first email should ensure that the recipient understands your business. This is the time to make a great impression. Display big, beautiful images. The body text should focus on the store’s beliefs. Your goal should be to build the brand’s image. Second email The second email focuses on a behind-the-scenes look at the company. It reviews sourcing the products. This could be a great time for creating an emotional connection with them. The emotional connection will lead to better customer relationships and repeat purchases. Third Email The final email in the brand-building series helps to accomplish two things: Shows happy customers Offers a discount on products Showing happy customers and testimonials gives the social proof that your brand is excellent. A call to action at the end of the email and a discount on the products will encourage sales. Then, display the offer at the end. 5. Birthday series A birthday email can be sent automatically to the subscriber on their birthday. This demonstrates personal attention and offers a discount for their next order. Click here to learn more. I came home at the end of the day. I’d been working all day. My 10-month old daughter was crying. I just felt overwhelmed and like there wasn’t enough time in the day to spend with her. I went to work feeling like there was something missing!  I had it pretty good. I loved my job… I just loved my daughter more! My Journey To Become a Full-Time Mother I always thought my husband and I would both work because that’s what people did and we needed the income. I was an educator so I thought it would be perfect. We would only need childcare for a few years then they would just go to school where I taught. I only had to be at work from 8am-4pm so I would still get plenty of time to spend with the kids. After we had our first child I realized, that while I loved my job, my colleagues and most of all the students I taught, I didnt want to pay someone else to raise my baby while I spent most of my day helping raise other peoples children. I was a passionate and successful educator but I wanted to be at home, using that energy for my own kids. It took us 5 years to make that dream a reality, by becoming debt-free. Just as our oldest was entering preschool I turned in my resignation. I had dreamed of this day for 5 years and yet when it came to the day I turned in my letters and spoke with my administrator about it I cried. I cried with joy for my kids at home who would no longer have to watch me leave every morning, I cried in sadness for my kids at school who I wouldnt see how much they had grown in the fall and I cried with fear of the unknown of “stay of home motherhood.”  Now I am living my dream! I once had someone say to me the toddler years seem to never end but when the kids start school you can’t imagine how fast the years fly by. This is so true for our family, with 3 kids 18 months apart. We lived in toddler land for what seemed like eternity. But I felt like all that time was slipping away and I knew I would never get it  back. I have been a full time mom for 4 years now.  I’m also a fitness instructor and my husband and I co-run a business together. I love being a full time mom and all the other parts too. But I still  felt so stressed and like there was not enough time in the day do to everything. It was hard to keep up with the laundry and dishes without feeling guilty about not playing with the kids. I also felt guilty  playing with my kids then feeling the weight of the housework piling on. Wait. . . This is how I felt when I was working full time and being a mom! Until . . . . How to Be Intentional With Your Schedule and Time A year ago my husband I got some business advice as we were preparing turn our part-time business helping others find their dream careers into our full-time venture. The advice was, “Plan out everything or work would rule our schedule.” These words made me think back to the advice all your friends and old people told me about how “slow the toddler years go” and “how quickly the school years go.” I realized that although I was living my “dream job” and had the freedom to choose my schedule, I was letting my life  slip away by not being intentional about my time. If I was not intentional about my time before I knew it my kids would be  moving out and turning  18! It seemed overwhelming and silly at first to schedule everything. I mean everything! I scheduled when when my husband and I would get ready, when we would eat, when we would work out and when I would do dishes and laundry. But the most important intentional time on the calendar was spending quality time with my  kids. What intentional scheduling allowed: 1. Time to sit and focus on the kids without the weight of chores piling up. 2. Time to do those chores without feeling guilty or like I should be spending time with my kids. 3. The kids to see that other things had to get done but they still could get time with me too. 4. The kids to willingly help with household tasks because they  knew then they could spend more time with me. 5. The kids to feel fulfilled and be able to play independently longer while I completed other tasks. Knowing that I had a specific place and time to get things accomplished gave me the “freedom” I was really looking for and the fulfillment to enjoy the time with the kids instead of always thinking of my to-do list. The great thing about intentional scheduling is that we all have the same 24 hours in a day. Being intentional about what we do in those 24 hours gives you freedom from guilt and overwhelm in order to spend and enjoy the time where it is most important to you and your values.

People who care, share - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Knowledge Sharing is hot these days, and many companies are introducing processes and technologies that allow employees to learn from each other and to collect the implicit knowledge present in any company. And very often, it doesnt work. Companies put a knowledge management system in place and nothing happens. Nobody uses it. It then becomes a struggle to convince employees that knowledge sharing is good for them and for the company, based on a whats in it for me approach. And thats because the whole Knowledge Sharing approach is fundamentally flawed, and because businesses really need to focus on something else. That something else is Passion Sharing. Its almost impossible to make people care about Knowledge Sharing if they dont care about their knowledge in the first place. And if they dont care, they dont share (yes, Im pretty proud of that little ditty :o). Get people together whore passionate about a topic, however, and knowledge sharing happens automagically. You dont need to lift a finger to get them started. In fact, the most difficult part may be to get them to stop and take a break. This is also why people meet on meetup.com around topics like crocheting, chihuahua dogs or camping. Theyre not getting paid or being pressured. There are no consultants to tell them when or how to share their knowledge. It just happens. Because they care. Here are some of the main differences between Knowledge Sharing and Passion Sharing: Knowledge Sharing Passion Sharing What matters is how much you know what matters is how much you care Convince people to share their knowledge Let people get passionate about their work knowledge sharing happens automagically Create systems to share knowledge Create systems to let people find other people who share their passion Its about knowledge, processes and systems Its about people Is perceived as a burden by employees Is seen as a help Boring! Fun! Did I forget any? Another advantage of Passion Sharing is that it plays into the whole Nobody cares how much you know, untill they know how much you care thing. People come across as more trustworthy and likable when theyre passionate about what they do. This is one more reason why we need passionate people in the workplace. And of course, if you want people to be passionate about their jobs, you need to make them happy at work. What an obscure Danish philosopher can teach modern workplaces - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Unless youre Danish, you have probably never heard of K.E. L?gstrup, who was a? Danish philosopher and theologian?whose?work has exerted considerable influence in postwar Nordic thought. His most influential idea?was presented in his?1956 book The Ethical Demand (Den Etiske Fordring). Heres the basic concept: Trust is not of our own making; it is given. Our life is so constituted that it cannot be lived except as one person lays him or herself open to another person and puts him or herself into that person?s hands either by showing or claiming trust. By our very attitude to another we help to shape that person?s world. By our attitude to the other person we help to determine the scope and hue of his or her world; we make it large or small, bright or drab, rich or dull, threatening or secure. We help to shape his or her world not by theories and views but by our very attitude towards him or her. Herein lies the unarticulated and one might say anonymous demand that we take care of the life which trust has placed in our hands. To paraphrase, he acknowledges the fundamentally social nature of humans. He says that you never interact with another human being without holding a little bit of that persons life in your?hand. I think this applies in every aspect of life but in the workplace we often fall into a pattern of thinking that puts other concerns first and our?attitude towards other human beings?is affected by time pressure, economic pressure, performance pressure etc. We know that conformity makes people very quickly adopt the norms and behaviors of people around them (especially people in authority) and toxic cultures very quickly?make people act in ways that can border on sociopathic. But it doesnt matter?what types of?pressure your?job brings to bear?on you none of that gives you license to treat other people with less than utmost respect and care. None of that gives you a pass to treat customers, coworkers, vendors etc badly. This goes double for managers, whose bad behavior is always?seen by employees and adopted as the new norm.
